Show Me the Money

Last August, forty-nine people installed my bedtime-story app. Thirty-two asked it for a story, twenty-five read it to the end, fifteen reached the paywall. Not one started a trial. Every event fired, every screen rendered, the billing integration was perfect — and the app earned nothing. I ship fourteen apps on my own — fourteen on Android, thirteen of them also on iOS — plus the pipelines that feed them. No team. One of them has over a million installs and used to pay for most of what I earned; the mix keeps moving, and that shift is most of this talk. This is the field report with my real dashboards: which ad formats actually pay, the Remote Config kill switches and pacing knobs that let me turn ads up or off without a release (and the day a single flag silently stopped every interstitial), the weekly-versus-yearly paywall experiments that convert in one app and die in another, the solo-dev quality stack that reviews and gates every release, and the content machine that keeps putting users in front of the ad unit. The conclusion is the uncomfortable one: monetization made my apps better. You cannot get paid by users who never come back, so the money is what forced me to fix onboarding, startup time and retention. And when you are one person with fourteen apps, revenue is the only honest signal for which one deserves your next hour.
